7 Cat Naming Tips
Naming a new kitten is a fun process, but it can also be intimidating. Finding the perfect moniker for your new kitty does not have to be as challenging or stressful as some of us make it to be. Be careful not to complicate the process. You must also remember that a feline does not process thoughts or understand words like humans do.
Think of your cat as having a two-year-old toddler’s intelligence and cognition level. Cats can recognize when we are talking to them and know that their name stands out as important. They also distinguish and respond to their owner’s voices over those of strangers. Some cats even respond to baby talk, but only from their owners. A study from 2022, done in France and published in the journal Animal Cognition, shows that cats can clearly tell the difference and respond differently to cat-directed speech compared to human-directed speech
Simple Cat Naming Tips To Remember
- Keep it simple. Cats understand shorter words better than longer ones. One—or two-syllable words are best.
- Cats have been shown to prefer double-syllable words. They also respond better to words that end in vowels. When we say a word that ends in a vowel, our tone of voice changes. Cats pick up on this change, making the words stand out. In particular, felines respond very well to the long “ee” sound.
- Cats also like long vowel sounds better. They can comprehend these sounds more easily than short vowel sounds.
- Avoid words that sound like common commands or like the names of other pets or human family members. You do not want to confuse your pet, so avoid words or terms similar to commonly used terms in the house.
- When making your decision, consider your kitten’s personality, breed, appearance, and history.
- It is important to remember that teaching a kitten a new name is a learning process for them and you. Stay patient and understand that this will take time, repetition, and plenty of positive reinforcement.
- Regardless of what term you choose, you want to be sure that it is appropriate and cannot be considered offensive. This is especially important when choosing an idea from a different language or culture. While it might be funny for you, you do not want to make anyone uncomfortable or pass undue judgment on your pet based on their name.
