Time to impress your friends and family with these amazing homemade chocolate balloon bowls.

What are they? Well, they are bowls made of chocolate that are made with water balloons. Isn’t that awesome? They create the perfect container to hold ice cream, candies, fruit, or any number of other things. Maybe you want to have your morning cereal in one? So many possibilities.

These chocolate ballon bowls are a chocolate lovers dream. And it is a fun activity to do with the family and kids. They are so simple and easy to make, if I can do it, you can do it. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather the ingredients

In order to make these amazing chocolate balloon bowls, you need just a handful of easy to find ingredients and items:

  • Chocolate – You can’t have chocolate bowls without chocolate! You can use chocolate chips, milk, dark, semi-sweet, etc. Or you can use chocolate candy bars, and even candy melts.
  • Oil – The oil will help thin out the chocolate a little bit. Vegetable, canola, olive, coconut, shortening, etc. will all work.
  • Water balloons– Any type of water balloon should work, but sometimes they are fairly thin and pop in the chocolate, that is why I elect to use the thicker-walled water balloons.
  • Spoon
  • Parchment Paper or a silicone mat
  • Sheet pan
  • Filling – Ice cream, fruit, whipped cream, candy, etc.

Step 2: How to make chocolate balloon bowls

Begin by washing the balloons, just to be safe, since they will be dipped in the melted chocolate. Stretch them a bit and then fill them up with air and tie them. I always use my bike pump to fill up the balloons. Make sure to not fill them up too much. The size of the balloon will dictate the size of the chocolate bowl.

Melt the chocolate. Again you can use whatever kind of chocolate you like, I really like using semi-sweet chocolate chips. Add the oil to the chocolate, and then melt it in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave using bursts of 30 seconds and then stirring, etc. until completely melted and runny.

You may also melt them on the stovetop with the double boiler method. Place a pot with a little bit of water in it, then put a larger bowl so it rests on top of the pot. Set the heat to medium, and as the water heats up the steam will warm the bottom of the bowl, gently melting the chocolate.

Take a spoonful of melted chocolate and pour a little circle about the size of a half-dollar on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. This will be the base for the chocolate balloon bowls.

Step 3: Dip the balloons in melted chocolate

Make sure the chocolate isn’t really hot, if it is, allow it to cool for a few minutes. Take a balloon and gently push it straight down into the melted chocolate, then come straight out. Allow the excess to drip off.

Then place it on the round chocolate bases.

Once you are done dipping the chocolate balloon bowls, put the pan in the fridge and allow the chocolate to set. This usually takes at least 30 minutes.

Once the chocolate has chilled and set, it is time to remove them from the fridge. Then comes my favorite part, popping those balloons!

Take a knife or other sharp pointed tool and poke the balloon so it pops. Remove the balloon scraps and you will be left with some awesome empty chocolate balloon bowls.

Gently remove the chocolate bowls from the parchment paper and place them on a plate. Or you could just leave them on the pan. Time to fill them up!

I really like filling mine with vanilla ice cream, and then drizzling strawberry or chocolate syrup and adding nuts. You could even do a full-blown sundae or banana split if you wanted.

Or maybe you want to add melted chocolate to the bowl for a fondue station with a bunch of fruit? Some many fun ideas you can do with these chocolate balloon bowls. Enjoy!

How long do chocolate balloon bowls last?

Can’t finish them all? Have no fear, these chocolate bowls will last quite awhile in the fridge. You can even freeze them. They will last at least 2 to 3 months, but I am guessing the will all be eaten by then.

Equipment

  • Water balloons (Any thick-walled balloons will work, just be leary of the thin balloons, they like to pop while dipping in the chocolate, haha)

  • spoon

  • parchment paper

  • sheet pan

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces of chocolate chips any kind (340g)
  • 1 Tbsp. of oil vegetable, etc. (15ml)
  • Fillings (ice cream, fruit, whipped cream, etc.)

Instructions

  • Wash and dry the balloons, then fill them up with air. Don't fill them up too much. The size of the balloon will determine the size of the chocolate bowl.

  • Add the chocolate and the oil to a microwave-safe bowl and melt it in the microwave using bursts of 30 seconds and then stirring, and repeating until melted.

Or melt them on the stovetop with the double-boiler method. Take a pot and add about an inch deep of water to it. Take a large metal bowl or pyrex bowl and set it on the pot. Set the burner to medium. As the water heats up the steam will heat the bowl and melt the chocolate.

  • Line a sheet pan with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Then take a spoon and scoop some of the chocolate and create a disc, about the size of a half-dollar, on the pan. Do this for as many bowls as you want to make. These will be the bases for the bowls.

  • Take a balloon and dip it straight down into the chocolate, then straight up. Let the excess drain off, then place it on the chocolate base. Once all dipped, put the pan in the fridge so the chocolate can set. Usually takes at least 30 minutes.

  • Once the chocolate sets you can pop the balloons! Poke them with a knife, or another pointy tool. Remove the popped balloon from the bowls.

  • You can leave them on the parchment paper or put the chocolate bowls on a plate. Fill them up with whatever you like, ice cream, candy, whipped cream, fruit, etc. Enjoy!
